Ilocki Podrumi: Nicholas of Ilok’s winery

The unusual Iločki Podrumi winecellar was built around 1450 beneath the castle of Ilok by Nicholas of Ilok, ruler over the Slavonian territories.
In the late 1600s, after the end of the Ottoman power, the castle of Ilok passed to the Prince Odescalchi family, and Livio Odescalchi planted the first Traminer grapes there in 1710 around the family’s summer residence, on a hill called today Principovac. This viticultural zone is considered Slavonia’s Grand Cru, and since 1700 its producers have grown and bottled Traminac (Roter Traminer) and Grasevina (Riesling Italico).
